12 Tips for VLC media Player You Must Know.


VLC is the World most using the media player and recently they had completed their three billion downloads and this popularity of VLC media player is not only because of its amazing ability to play almost any media files that you throw at it. 

There are many useful features like Control VLC via a web browser, Set video as a desktop wallpaper, create a wall of videos, Activate VLC’s interactive Zoom mode, rotate a video in VLC, stream from VLC to Chromecast, record your webcam, record your desktop, convert the file to different formats, change VLC’s appearance and many more are there.

1. Rip CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays.


If you have a collection of audio and video discs and you want to rip them to your PC then forget about any third party software to do so. You can use VLC media player for this process and enjoy watching your favorite films without the need of the original CD, DVD or Blu-ray.



The Following steps to do so-

01. Insert the disc that you want to rip in your optical drive.

02. Now, in VLC go to Media and click on Convert/Save (or press Ctrl + R).

03. Click on the Disc tab and under Disc selection, choose the type of disc you want to rip. [ For video- ‘Nodisc menus’ is ticked ].

04. Using the drop-down menu select the correct disc drive and click on the Convert/Save button.


05. At last, choose the format in which you want to save the file and set a destination and click Start.

2. Control VLC via a web browser.


Did you know that you can use any web browser as a remote control for your VLC Media Player? You can enable this option by the following steps to explain below.


The Following steps to do so-


01. At first, go to Tools > Preferences and under ‘Show setting’ at the bottom of the interface tab and click on ‘All’.

02. Click the arrow next to Interface to expand that section, then click ‘Main interfaces’.

03. Check the Web box on the right which we get after clicking on ‘Main interfaces’ section.


04. Click on Lua then enter a password under Lua HTTP, and click on Save and restart VLC.

If you want to test whether the remote-control is functioning or not then open a browser and type localhost:8080 into the address bar and press Enter. Type your password and your VLC’s remote control interface will appear. 


3. Set videos as desktop wallpaper.


One of the very interesting feature but least known features of VLC is the ability to display the video as a desktop wallpaper. In the previous version of VLC, this allowed the video to run in the background, just like regular wallpaper behind open windows and icons. This has been changed in the newer release and it now just behaves like a modified version of full-screen mode.


The Following steps to do so-

01. Play any video that you want to set as a wallpaper of your desktop and right-click on it.

02. Now, go to the video and select ‘set as wallpaper’.



The video will switch to full-screen mode but now you’ll be able to access the Windows Start menu and taskbar and drag windows on top of the playing clip. 


4. Create a wall of videos. 


It is not the most sensible way to watch a video on your PC. VLC wall effect is more impressive in that case.


The Following steps to do so-

01. Go to tools and under Tools > Effects > Filters and click on the video Effect tab.

02. Click on the geometry tab below that and tick wall and set the number of rows and columns you want. Keep the number low if you want to avoid your system slowing to a crawl ]


03. Drag a video clip to the player and it will be displayed across a number of movable and resizable windows.

  

5. Unlock VLC's hidden jigsaw Puzzle. 


I am sure that many of you don’t about this interesting feature of VLC that turn a playing video into a solvable jigsaw puzzle.



The Following steps to do so-

01. Start playing a video and go to Tools, under Tools select Effects and Filters.

02. Click on Video Effects, then go to Geometry tab and tick the ‘Puzzle game’ box.


03. The video will turn into a jigsaw puzzle.

[ Set the number of rows and columns to set the difficulty level of the game]

You can click individual puzzle pieces and drag them around inside the playing window. When one piece is connected with another, it will snap into place and you’ll be able to move that section around.


6. Activate VLC's Interactive Zoom mode. 


 Did you know that you can zoom to any part of a video using VLC’s Interactive Zoom? This is also another interesting feature of VLC that give you a close-up of the area and keeps you focused on those spots as the video plays.


The Following steps to do so-


01. Start playing a video, then go to Tools > Effects and Filters.

02. Click on Video Effects then go to Geometry tab and select Interactive Zoom box.

03. The video will automatically zoom in and you will see a thumbnail showing the full video in the upper-left corner.


The video will move accordingly to show you the area underneath the box. Below the thumbnail is the zoom control to zoom in and out. Just tick the interactive Zoom box to go back to normal. 


7. Rotate a Video in VLC.


VLC automatically detects which way up a video is supposed to play, but some clips which are recorded by mobile or other devices display upside down or sideways. As we know that VLC is master of all media player and it has a solution to this problem too. VLC offers a temporary solution that lets you watch the video in its correct orientation.



The Following steps to do so-

01. Play the video and go to Tools > Effects and Filters.

02. Click on Video Effects, under Video Effects select Geometry tab and tick the Transform box.

03. Use the drop-down menu to choose the amount of rotation in 90-degree steps.


You can also flip the video horizontally or vertically and transpose or anti-transpose the playback. You can also use the wheel to spin the video around.


8. Watch and Download YouTube Video.


It may happen much time that you want to download a video from YouTube to watch it offline. VLC can do it for you.



The Following steps to do so-

01. Copy the URL of the video from YouTube.

02. Open VLC and go to Media and then open Network Streaming. Past the copied Url in the Network URL box and Click Play.

03. VLC will begin streaming the video, then go to Tools > Codec Information and long URL in the location box at the bottom of the window.


04. Paste this URL into your browser’s address bar. The video will begin playing there.

Right-click this and save the video from the context menu and once it gets downloaded, select it and give it a more descriptive name.




9. Record Your Webcam.


You can use VLC Media Player to record footage from your webcam to watch later.


The Following steps to do so-

01. Go to Media and Open Capture Device then set ‘Capture mode’ to DirectShow. 

02. Use the drop-down menu to change’ Video device name’ to your webcam and ‘Audio device name’ to your microphone.

03. Click ‘Advanced options’ and change the video input frame rate 30 or tick the box next to ‘Device properties’.




You can then start watching the live feed. To record something on the screen, right-click it and hit Stop and the recording will be saved. 


10. Apply Video and Audio Effects. 


VLC lets you apply a number of fun effects to videos and music files as they play.


The Following steps to do so-

01. Go to Tools > Effects and Filters and browse the options in the Audio Effects and Video Effects tabs.


02. The choices are sorted into a separated row. Under video effects, you can adjust colors, including watching the video in sepia; crop a clip; add a logo or text. Under Advanced, you can add blurs and effects such as Mirror and Psychedelic.




11. Download missing subtitles for films.


If you've downloaded a foreign language movie or TV show that doesn't come with subtitles, you can add them manually. Finding the correct subtitles can be difficult, but VLC can track them down through its VLSub add-on.



The following step to do so-

01. Download the LUA file and copy it to the extensions folder, which should be located at C:\ Program Files\ VideoLAN\ VLC\ lua\ extensions.

02. Close and restart VLC if it is running, then go to View >VLSub.

03. Click 'Search by the name', enter the title of the movie or show, then select the relevant subtitle and click 'Download selection'.




12. Convert Files to different formats.



You don't need to install any other program to convert audio and video files to different formats. VLC media can easily do it for you with a large number of option to use from. This is also useful for reducing the size of a video for playing on a mobile device.



The following step to do so-


01. To convert the file, go to Media > Convert/Save, click on Add and find the video you want to convert.

02. Click on the Convert/Save button, the drop-down menu next to profile and choose any of the listed options.

03. For more manual control, click the spanner button to the right of the Profile box and pick an 'encapsulation' (the file format). 



Note: when you select one, the list of features supported by it will be shown below. MKV, for example, offers the full range of options, while MP4 doesn't allow chapters, and AVL doesn't support subtitles, menus or chapters, and isn't streamable either. You can then pick the video or Audio codecs to use, and optionally add subtitles.
